Hideo was a young Japanese high school student. His parents were both university professors that taught math and social studies. They were very intelligent and many people in the community admired them. As he was growing up his parents always pushed him to study hard and to do well in school. However no matter how well he did, it was never enough for his parents. If he got a “B” they would say “Why did you not get an “A”?” When he got the “A” they said you should have got that from the start! This was very frustrating for Hideo and he was becoming more and more angry with his parents as he got older.
One day he decided that he would teach them a lesson and vowed to himself that he would show them or get back at them. So he decided to fail all the following tests in order to upset and embarrass his parents.
In school there was a teacher called Ms. Yamada and she was Hideo’s favorite teacher. She could see whenever he was having a problem and was able to help him solve the problem usually. That morning Hideo came into class with a strange attitude that said I don’t care anymore about anything. He sat down and put his head down on the desk and went to sleep. After the lesson, Ms Yamada called him to her desk and asked him what was going on? He said "Nothing." Again she asked but got no response. Finally she said “ OK, if you don’t want to talk to me that is fine, but I did not do anything on you, so why are you treating me this way
Hideo felt sorry for her and said he was having problems with his parents. She asked him to explain. So he told her his thinking and what he planned to do.
“ So you want to get back at your parents and make them pay
Well if you do this, then are you prepared to pay the price for the consequences?
“ What do you mean?
” He asked
“ Well if you fail all your up coming tests, this will shock and upset your parents to a certain degree. However it will not change their lives. You, on the other hand will be worse off. You will then have to do a load of work to catch up work to make up the grades. You will have less time to spend with your friends, doing the things you like. Also your options for life after high school will be effected if you fail these tests.
“ You mean I won’t be able to go to Waseda University
“ That could be the result. I don’t know. But you better consider this carefully.
“ I don’t know what to do. I hate my parents and the way they push me to study all the time!
“ I see. That is not so good, to hate your parents. They want you to do well in life and to become a great man in the future. They love you, and are doing their best for you. I do understand how you feel. So here is another option for you.
Imagine yourself ten years later. You failed these tests, the result was you could not get into Wasda university. you dropped out of school. Got a job in a factory, but you hated it and soon the boss fired you. You become homeless, loss all your friends and your family disown you. Is that a good place to be?
“ No, that is horrible! I don’t want that!
“ Ok. Now imagine you work hard now and pass all your tests with high marks. Your parents don’t appreciate the effort and results you have produced, but you know you were mature and took responsibility. You avoid the I’ll show you trap, you prevent your goals and passions from being destroyed or badly affected. You will be able to get into what ever university you like. Graduate with Honors. Get an excellent job, leave home and live a happy and successful life. You will have the last laugh. How about that option?
“ Thank you Ms. Yamada! That is the option I will go for. Thank you for your help, kindness, and support. I will make you proud of me!
“ You are very welcome. I look forward to seeing your test results. See you later.
Years later Hideo graduated from Waseda University, met a beautiful young lady, got married and they had a son. Hideo promised to encourage, guide and help his son to be happy, grateful, and to find his own way in life.
Until next time. I wish you peace, happiness and success. Martin Sensei
