“I want to be a black belt”. You say. Ok what is the first step to achieving that goal? Buy a suit? Find a teacher? Join a club? Practice all day everyday? STOP! To get a black belt is a very good goal to set yourself, but are you going to attain it, the smart way or the hard way. What price are you willing to pay to achieve this goal? I don’t just mean financially, it also requires commitment, time, effort, sacrifice, learning new ways of thinking and acting, controlling your mind and body and sometimes involves pain. Do you have a clear picture of what you will be like when you get your black belt? What kind of martial art will suit you?
There are many types of martial arts, these arts come from certain countries and have strong roots and traditions. This is both a good and bad thing and you need to consider this when choosing a martial art. For example Japanese martial arts are Kendo, Judo, Aikido, Jujitsu, and Karate to name a few. All of these have a Japanese spirit, tradition and movements favored by the Japanese. Korea has its own martial arts. I know only two Hapkido, and Taekwondo. These have very strong Korean influences very different from the Japanese. The Chinese have their styles. Mixing these arts can be very hard and very few people can do that well.
First to start with the end in mind, I would like to do a mind experiment with you. Please play along with me. We are going to use your imagination.
Find a place that you won’t be disturbed for a few minutes. Sit down, relax, open your mind and breath deeply.
In your mind’s eye, visualize a person walking towards you about a block away. You can’t see clearly who it is just now. As this person comes closer and is right in front of you, suddenly you realize it is you. But this is not the you from now, it’s you as you would like to be in a year from now. That person smiles and greets you warmly. He / she invites you to take a walk together and you can ask him / her questions to help you. You take the walk and ask lots of different things and you are guided as to what you will and should do. Finally you come back to the spot where you met, and the you from the future thanks you for your time and wishes you all the very best. You come back to the present moment in your room, safe, sound and feeling great.
Congratulations you have just been in touch with your deeper self. This was a feel of what is important to you and how you are going to accomplish things in the year ahead. It is a powerful way for you to clear your head from confusion and to turn dreams into reality.
You can use this to help you in all aspects of your life, from how to do well at school. work, improve relationships or to get a black belt.
The next step is to look around and try a few classes at the local martial arts in your area. You will know when you find the best teacher and style for you because everything will feel right and go smoothly. Take your time don’t rush into making a commitment to join a club or school until you are completely satisfied that this is for you. If you need help and want to ask me something please email or call me and I will help as best I can. Until next time I wish you peace, happiness and success.
