To lead requires guts! You have to have thick skin, be unrealistically persistent and wildly courageous. You will need to dare more than a reasonable person and risk far more than an ordinary person. How can you do this? Well, let the child in you answer this. As a child, you had no fears, no limitations and no boundaries. You saw what you wanted and went for it without any hesitation. Even now, deep inside you at your core, is a well of courage waiting for you to tap into it. Everyone wants to be a superhero in one way or another, to have the power to keep going as all others around fall and give up.
To become the best and brightest leader you need to develop a mindset that says failure is not an option. What happens to most people when they get a good idea? As soon as they share it they meet resistance from others, this feels bad, so they throw in the towel and give up. This is why most people are in the state that they are in.
You need to realise that when you lead, act as a master, you will dream bigger dreams. This will attract greater resistance. The more you leave your comfort zone in passionate pursuit of idealistic dreams, the more obstacles you will face. Things will go wrong. You will have setbacks. People will let you down, some will try to pull you down, others will do their best to knock you down. Even family and friends will discourage you. These people are afraid of change and want to be safe, they cling to the old way of doing things. They will become your biggest critics. They will accuse you of being foolish, of living with your head in the clouds, tell you how much of a loser you will be, and call you insane! This could all be true. Of course, it is true. To follow your gut, to see opportunities where others see problems, to envision things becoming much better, while others stagnate and become complacent is to be a visionary. To stand up, have the guts and go for it, WOW now you are a SUPERHERO!
The vast majority of the people alive are too afraid of the change you need to move through on the way to a better version of your greatest vision. They can’t let go of all the wrong education they have received growing up and their needy clinging to keep the rules and laws that keep things as they have always been. You challenge them and they will brand you as being “abnormal”. Most people don’t have the guts to break from their past and to step up to become and do more. The peer mentality looks at the visionary and condemns, criticises, and sabotages the visionary. This is just a coping mechanism of small minded individuals afraid of development, growth and change. Criticism is the defence reaction that frightened people use to protect themselves against change.
So be prepared that once you step up to become the leader you are destined to be. You are going to attract the attention and condemnation of the critics. But understanding something intellectually is very different from dealing with it in real life. Remember that jealousy is the tribute that mediocrity pays to genius.
As you stretch your limitations to bring about better results and to influence world-class outcomes, you will meet inevitable obstacles. As you hold yourself to far higher standards than anyone could make you live by, you will face periods of self-doubt. The faith in the difference you can make and your belief in the leader you are born to become has to be stronger than the fear. Commit 100% to your vision, see it in your head and keep moving forward until your vision is accomplished. Keep giving the absolute best of yourself and more. Regardless of what comes back in the short term keep hold of your dream. That will require guts, bravery, and the fierce resolve that all top level people who walked the path before you tapped into. You can do it.
Until next time I wish you peace, love and happiness. Martin Acton sensei
